What is an independent funeral planner?

An independent funeral planner is hired by families or individuals to help plan or pre-plan funerals. They do not work for and are not benefited by any funeral home, cemetery, funeral insurance company or any other death industry organization that supplies goods or services.

Here are a few of the skills an independent funeral planner should have:

  • Understands why and how funerals are meant to help the living.
  • They are hired by and work for the family.
  • Has years of experience serving families while in the funeral industry.
  • They are knowledgeable about the costs and benefits of funeral options.
  • They are skilled facilitators, shoppers, negotiators and event planners.
  • They have experience as celebrants in conducting funerals.
  • They understand when to refer families to legal, financial, funeral and grief counselling professionals.

An independent planner uses all of their experience, knowledge and creativity to come alongside the family to plan a very personal event. that helps the family go forward.

At Life Journey Funeral Planning we understand that none of us can cheat grief. We can and must to some degree grieve but together we can work to shape it to be more helpful. Funerals/celebration of lives should help us go forward through grief.
